In the series of Internal Faculty Seminars, on 25 January 2023, a seminar was organized by the School of Law on the topic “Role of the Indian Constitution to Accomplish Climate Justice”. The topic was presented by Dr. Ashwani Kumar Dwivedi, Assistant Professor, School of Law. This seminar enabled the faculties to understand the concept and demand for climate justice. Weather refers to the conditions at one time and place, and can change from hour to hour, day to day, and season to season. Climate, on the other hand, refers to the long-term average pattern of weather in a place

When the Indian Constitution was adopted, it did not contain clear provisions for environmental protection. The rear surface of modern environmental jurisprudence in India evolved after the Stockholm Convention, in 1972. Some significant environmental provisions were introduced into our Constitution through the 42nd Amendment. He explained the importance and need for law in society. He focused on various issues and complexities associated with Environmental Justice. He also emphasized the role of the Constitution to accomplish climate justice. The foundation of the administration of environmental justice in India is laid down by our judiciary’s creative interpretative skills while recognizing the right to a healthy environment as part of the right to life under Article 21 of the Constitution.

Finally, he summed up his presentation with the conclusion that it is mankind, who is causing climate injustice, not nature, citing the example of the covid period that how the river Ganges was clean and air pollution was very less due to which mountains were easily visible from cities like Meerut and Bareilly. The Seminar ended up with a question-answer session.
